What Happens to Sewage Water

What happens to sewage water is a question that is asked quite often.

It is an important question because sewage systems have to deal with high amounts of pressure, wastewater is rich in nutrients that can cause severe contamination if it does not get released into the environment. Once in the environment, it may be difficult for a small piece of sewage water to evaporate and thus the question becomes what happens to sewage water once it leaves the sewage treatment plant? In this article, we will try to answer this question.

To start with, sewage water can be released into natural systems such as rivers, lakes, and streams. What happens to the water after it leaves the treatment facility? Well, this is a good question and there are no easy answers for this.

There Are Some Factors to Consider

  • Natural circulation: One of the easiest factors that can help remove contaminants is natural circulation of the water in natural bodies of water. If a sewage treatment plant has treatment equipment which traps water before it can reach these bodies of water, it is likely that the water will travel faster through the pipes before it reaches the natural bodies of water. This means that it will have a chance to be diluted.
  • Moisture: A sewage treatment plant can filter the water which has been captured by the pipes and will ensure that the water is less than 90 degrees Fahrenheit. For this reason, it is likely that the water will travel faster and the amount of water that will travel to the natural bodies of water will be reduced. But the problem is that the filter will be blocking the way for some of the water.
  • Light: The water that comes from the sewage treatment plant will also travel quickly through the pipes to the natural bodies of water. So if the light is poor, there is a chance that the bacteria, viruses, and other organisms that are present in the water will not be in the required amount.
  • Cold temperature: There is a much lower chance that the water from the sewage treatment plant will be transferred to the natural bodies of water when the temperature is below freezing. For this reason, the level of contamination in these bodies of water may be higher. However, the level will also be less when the temperature is above freezing.
  • Open-cast: The worst scenario of what happens to sewage water is when the water is stored in open-cast facilities where it is exposed to different environmental conditions. For example, algae and other impurities may affect the water and there is a bigger risk of chemical contamination.
  • Temporary storage: As long as the sewage treatment plant has not yet completed its tasks, the water from it will be stored temporarily in ponds and water troughs. This is so the water can be used in many small projects and it will also help the plants to prevent the spread of disease.
  • Heavy industry: What happens to sewage water from the sewage treatment plant is unlikely to affect the water from any industries that use the water. Even if the facility uses power equipment, the sewage treatment plants will filter the water to ensure that the water is clean and free from chemical and microbial contamination.
  • Industrial purification: What happens to sewage water from the sewage treatment facility is unlikely to affect the water from the factories and the plants which use it. Therefore, the water will have been purified so that it is as clean as possible. Therefore, this water will not be affected by the industrial processes that require it.
  • Sewage treatment ponds: Once the industrial plants that need the water have been built, they will be given permission to store the treated water in a sewage treatment pond. The ponds will keep the water clean and will allow the plants to remove chemical and microbial contaminants.

What happens to sewage water from the sewage treatment plant will depend on many factors. But these factors are quite clear and the conditions in the pond will have an impact on what will happen to the water once it is released into the environment.
